PESQ Basic

All modern communications use some form of signal compression algorithm. In addition, modern speech and audio codes use perceptual information to decide which parts of a signal to send and which to discard.

Simple measures like SNR and frequency response do not give an accurate indication of the quality of these modern systems. Traditionally, MOS (Mean Opinion Score) is the result of subjective tests with panels of human listeners (ITU-T P.800/P.830); however, such tests are expensive and are impractical for testing.

In contrast, QoE Systems' PESQ (Perceptual Evaluation of Speech) Algorithm Firmware can be used in a wide range of measurement applications (e.g., codec development, equipment development, selection and optimization, as well as monitoring. Being fast and repeatable, QoE Systems' PESQ Algorithm makes it possible to perform extensive testing over a short period and also enables the quality of time-varying conditions to be analyzed.

PESQ measures one-way quality: a signal is injected into the system under test, and the degraded output is compared by PESQ with the input (reference) signal. Modeling perception - specifically human auditory perception - is the core concept behind PESQ.

QoE Systems' PESQ Algorithm Firmware supplies the algorithm necessary to interpret the end-to-end quality, applying the PESQ algorithm to provide a MOS-score. These off-the-shelf packages along with technical information and documentation provide everything necessary to achieve a PESQ implementation that conforms with the ITU standards.

QoE Systems' algorithms are provided as a .dll, application extension, and are based on technology from Psytechnics. All QoE Systems' algorithms are officially licensed versions that are in full compliance with the appropriate ITU standards and patents from BT, KPN and Psytechnics.

Basic algorithm

The QoE Systems Basic PESQ Algorithm provides the standard capability as defined by the ITU to test narrow-band voice with 8 bit resolution.

 
Basic-Plus algorithm

The QoE Systems Basic-Plus PESQ Algorithm adds the capability to test both narrow-band and wide-band voice/audio with either 8 or 16 bit resolution.

This version also includes the capability to work with a Head and Torso systems (HATS) as used to analyze telephony microphones and receivers.

 
Advanced algorithm

The QoE Systems Advanced PESQ Algorithm provides many additional parameters over-and-above the ITU-defined basic MOS measurements; this includes the capability to completely customize the algorithm output.
